Blackfish vs. "Why Zoos are Good"

Blackfish relies on pathos to emotionally move the audience and highlight the psychological and physical torture endured by orcas in captivity. There is nothing more convincing than the testimony of a person who used to aid in the cruelty against orcas and now speaks up against it. It’s a form of repentance and appeals to the audience’s empathy and trust. At the end of the day, a person who once worked within the crime ring knows its inner workings best—and if they choose to speak out against it, the crimes must have been so inhumane that even they found them outrageous. One instance is when the documentary shows footage of young orcas being separated from their mothers, while adult whales refuse to leave the young ones and eventually die. A former trainer describes this as “the worst sound I have ever heard” ( Blackfish ). Through heartbreaking imagery, the director prompts feelings of anger, sorrow, and helplessness. This impact is further intensified through the testimonials of the ...

Impacts of natural processes

Impact Keerthana 6/09/20 Theme: change     Natural processes, in the case the erosion cycle, affects the landscape which further impacts Humans and their settlements. But Humans also impact natural process and systems (river and coastal), which also drastically the landscapes and may or may not accelerate the natural process. How? The continuous cutting back of land either direction can form waterfalls, plunge pools, potholes, etc. Deposition of sediments can form flood plains, deltas, lagoons, sand spits, etc. How does it impact humans and their settlement, in a way it is beneficial as these landforms generate revenue from tourism because they are quite aesthetic and thought provoking. These landforms bring in people which increases population; therefore, the demands are also increased. More dams for hydroelectricity, canals are built which divert the river flow, pollution rates are increased. In short, the water needs are increased and so is the pollution rates, these...

Coastal systems

Coastal systems Keerthana 28/08/20 Theme:change The coastal system, what is the first thing you think about when you read this terminology? It already gives out the hint that it is something related to the coasts (beaches), oceans and the processes which occur there. It is a dynamic environment and so is the river system also. The coast is the place where the sea meets land like a beach, it is an open system. With this, lets contrast and find the similarities between a river system and a coastal system, just to jog your memory of the previous blog cause you’ll find many similarities and differences between these two systems just like a couch and a chair. First, lets do two differences, coastal systems, as the name suggests is involving sea or the ocean, which means it is on a large scale but the river system is a small scale process ( but this can wreck havoc, it ain’t as innocent as it sounds). Also the same erosion cycle happens in both the systems but at different rates. Now c...

River systems

River systems  Keerthana 27/08/20 Theme:change Honestly, at first I just thought that the river system was just the ecosystem and the environment around the river but it turned out to be so much more. A river system was actually the entire natural water system in a drainage basin. I’ll kick start this intriguing system from the basics, like what a river is. Well, a river is a large natural streams of water that is channeled and then empties out in a large body of water like a sea or a lake. Since, I have already mentioned what a river system is, I will immediately jump to what a river profile is, in simple words it is a line representing from where the river starts to its mouth, where it meets the sea.  The point where the river starts from is called as the source or the origin of the river and where it meets the sea is called as the mouth. The first stage of the river or the upper course of the river or also the young phase, here the potential energy of the water becom...
